Question:

Way back in the day I used to take night classes at a university that allowed students to remotely proxy through its servers and gain access to all the electronic journals offered on the library terminals. I’ve been finding myself more and more lately wishing I had access to things like Lexis, JSTOR and the National Journal Hotline, so I wonder: do such proxies still exist? And if so: are there any university libraries out there (or public ones!) that sell memberships to the general public that might include access to such a thing? Or is there maybe some other alternative out there?

  2. mistermatt answered: My university provides this sort of service to students. I’m not sure about the general public availability, but if you find out please post.

  4. blech answered: I believe the joining the San Francisco libraries gives you JSTOR access. It’s worth asking if the NYPL does the same.
  5. thefourth answered: Oh my, my sister helps me get access to JSTOR, I can’t imagine the day we’re both out of school and can’t use it anymore.
  6. needsmoresalt answered: The NYPL has some of those — maybe not the Hotline, but definitely the OED and possibly JSTOR?
  7. iamjustsyd answered: They still exist and it’s one of the things I’m going to miss when I graduate. Most of those journals have paid memberships.
  8. delgrosso answered: +1 on the public library route.
  9. buildwritecut answered: in PDX, you can get access with a public library account (non-university)
  10. usualchatter answered: I know in CT there’s iCONN.org that lets you access a ton of sources using just your library card. Maybe start looking at your library?
  11. mills answered: Abby has one? HOW MUCH?
  12. kumokasumi answered: Informally, I used to ask friends with boxes on better-endowed university networks to give me an ssh account I could proxy through.
