Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at her first congressional swearing-in ceremony in January, 2007, alongside husband Mark Kelly, commander of the final mission of the NASA space shuttle program, scheduled for launch next month. Congresswoman Giffords was shot in the head today with a semi-automatic weapon while meeting with constituents outside a grocery store in Tucson, AZ. She’s undergoing emergency surgery now and listed in critical condition. Twelve others were also injured. Let’s hope our better angels prevail inside Tucson’s University Medical Center.
